Nurse practitioners are becoming a big part of our healthcare in the United States; they can serve as the primary healthcare provider for a patient. Nurse practitioners are registered nurses that have finished a graduate-level training and are licensed by both the state in which they practice and have national certification through one of many national boards. To be licensed as a nurse practitioner the person must first be a licensed registered nurse and then complete a graduate level nurse practitioner program at an accredited university. The first nurse practitioner program was at the University of Colorado and began in 1965; since then many colleges and universities offer nurse practitioner programs, all of which are at the masters or doctoral level.

There are many areas of specialization for nurse practitioners; they provide prenatal and family planning services. They may specialize in pediatrics and can provide immunizations and well-baby care. Many nurse practitioners are employed by college or university health clinics or urgent care clinics, where they will see a variety of different illness and injuries.

A nurse practitioner may involve the patient and members of their family in the treatment they prescribe; nurses are trained in preventative and holistic care. They often want the patient to be involved in the decisions about their care. They do this the the patient feels as if they are playing an active role in their healthcare. Nurse practitioners have been taught to know the scope of their practice and if a patient needs care outside their abilities, they will refer the patent to the appropriate healthcare provider.

There are many different travel nurse jobs available, they are now filling many jobs that were once held only by doctors; they may work in emergency rooms, doctors offices and clinics. Nurse practitioners are an important part of our healthcare system.
