Festival Cliche’: Cakes

by Ian Kleine

Cakes have been one of the greatest achievements of the pastry industry. They have the aspect of softness that rivals the cookie’s toughness, sweetness as tender as the nectar of a flower, and elegance and glamor only achievable by the use of fruits and icing. Cakes are indeed held high in the bread industry, and as such, also has had the most variety and change over time.

Product Pricing 3

by Ian Kleine

Now here comes the nitty gritty, the actual math. Numbers do not lie, as far as most of us are concerned. So if you want to justify the price that you have in mind, you have to have the numbers and the figures to back your claim and reasoning up.

Ask yourself first, as a customer, how much are you willing to buy your own stuff. This might be an easy question, but you’ll falter when you realize that, in 9 out of 10 cases, you wouldn’t even buy your own product. Why is that? Because you focus on the fact that you see the product as something of your own craft and effort. This usually leads to lack of judgment, insertion of bias and other things.

Fair Auction

by Ian Kleine

A less-than-common affair in fairs around the country are auctions.

Auctions are just that, the usual bidding and all that snazz. You could go for a dramatic auction, or you could go for a simple one. The main theme is players bid to buy something at prices that escalate by the minute, depending on how far the buyer’s budget can stretch. There are a lot of common things to auction, with the theme stretching from the common (antiques, ornamental, land deeds) to the outlandish and far-off (service, a date, probably something unexpected). Just make sure to present at least ten things.

Basic Mead: Good Source of Income?

by Ian Kleine

Mead is an alcoholic beverage that is derived from honey and water, fermented and left to develop using yeast. The content may rise from that of slightly alcoholic, to one that could knock out a heavy drinker. More often than not, it is confused with the name ‘honey wine’ but it is still mead. Quite really, it is still just water and honey for the more no-nonsense folks out there.

A different type of mead that has herbs and spices (common favorites are ginger, vanilla, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, oregano and even lavender) is called metheglin. Metheglin comes from the word “meddyglyn” which roughly means ‘healing liquor’ suggesting to its earlier use as a type of therapeutic or immediate drug.

Leis Making

by Ian Kleine

But wait, what are they?

Leis are what we call those flowery orchid necklaces visitors get when they step foot into Hawaii or any tropical island, country for that matter. In other localities, they get referred to as garlands. Leis are a sign of hospitality and respect for both the host and the visitor. When you are offered such a gift, one makes sure to never reject the offering. It is a sign of great disrespect. Leis signify the host welcoming the visitor into the country. It also symbolizes the Hawaiian’s spirit of friendship, hope and family. But how to make one?

Cherry Tree Festival

by Ian Kleine

The city of Macon is aptly named as the Cherry Blossom Capital of the World with good reason. The streets are filled with the numerous blossoms, all from the trees in the sidewalk. The place reminds you of a modern Japanese-American themed city, as the usual-Japanese flowers float amongst modern American buildings and asphalt-lined streets.

The streets are bustling and filled with Yoshino cherry trees, and every Spring, they fill the air and the ground with their pale pink petals. It is a very extravagant display of color, which leaves their audience speechless and breathless for the first time.
