The Mexican Serape blanket is a quintessential token of Mexican. The colorful blankets, also known as Sarape or Saltillo blankets are admired throughout the country and world. They are also a popular souvenir purchased by tourists visiting Mexico.
Although the blankets can be found throughout the country, most are produced in the southern region of Mexico in the state of Tlaxcala. Many cheap imitations have appeared recently, but the truly authentic blankets are still woven by hand on wooden looms.
One large blanket can contain as many of ten separate colors and takes several hours to make. Generally the blankets contain one dominant color, which is the widest stripe in the serape blanket, whereas all other colors are varying stripes of thickness and are arranged in a recurring pattern.
Although the popularity of the Mexican blanket has spread through the country of Mexico and are often available anywhere tourists can be found, they are mostly all produced in the Tlaxcala region of southern Mexico.
The entire region is dedicated to the production of the Serape blankets, where families will often work their looms around the clock to supply the increased demand for this symbol of Mexico. The uses for the blanket are almost endless.
Anyone looking to add a spice of Mexico to any fiesta event, party, or dcor, cannot go wrong with the Mexican Serape blanket. It adds color and excitement that cannot be duplicated by any other decoration. The addition of the serape blanket will instantly identify the event or party as an authentic fiesta affair.
The durability of the blankets, which are machine washable, allows them to be enjoyed for years on end. The same style blanket is also used as a poncho, which can be worn to keep warm on a cool evening, or be used as a costume for Halloween or any other type of cultural event or program
