As a law student I got the tag as being a liberal. That was because I went to school with a lot of young republicans. Do you remember that term? When I would argue in class that some cases should be determined by social justice concerns and not always law courts I heard fellow classmates mockingly say I should become a lawyer for social work agencies.

I do not consider myself a liberal in any sense of the word. But if you remember the term young republicans, you will have an idea of the guys I went to law school with. Although my minor study in college was sociology. So I do know the principles of sociology and know why conservative called me a social worker anytime I argued a legal case from a caring and relative standpoint.

If you want to know what conservatives think of when they think of social workers, go back to some of the films of the fifty’s and sixties. Remember the movie with Marlon Brando who rides around on his motorcycle disrupting the normal way of life of each town he passes through. There is always a young attractive woman who knows the rebel is simply misunderstood by the rest of society. In fact society is why he is a rebel. Society has made him this way. And she is going to help him overcome all the wrong and injustice society has done to the rebel.

People with conservative views towards politics and society argue that it is not society who is fault if someone is not living a proper life. Conservatives argue that everyone has responsibility for their own actions. If you break the law, if you end up out of work, if you do not have an education, then it is your fault not society’s fault.

The social worker on the other hand, at least those who have studied sociology in the past fifty years and adopt the popular thinking believe that environment has a great deal to do with the way a person grows and becomes the adult he or she is. If a child grows up in a crime ridden area where drug dealing, prostitution, and illegal gambling is the norm he will have disadvantages a child living in an upper class family on the nice side of town does not even know exists.

I worked the ghetto as a sales representative. I worked the rich side of town as a sales representative. Guess where I would choose to grow up or raise a family. Listen no matter how driven a child is, no matter how smart a child is, growing up in the ghetto is not easy compared to growing up in an upper class area with two parents.

People still have self responsibility no matter where they live however. If you live in the ghetto and decide to live a life a crime or if you live on the rich side of town and decide to live a life of crime, it is still a decision you made. It helps no one to blame society for the decision you made.

Many young people live in crime infested jungles. They live in area controlled by drug dealers. They do not want to hear about how their environment is holding them back. They simply want out. And social work agencies can help them get out.
