Write a business plan? Boring, right? Naturally you know you need one, but what can you do now? You’ll probably still need a formal business plan, there is something you can do today that will kick you into gear. It’s a a super simple plan starter and it’s called writing your “Dream Day.” Don’t mock it! It can really get you moving in the right direction!
Get some quiet time to start this task. You must decide what it is that you really and truly want. Be free from ringing phones and computer messages. Your reason for this task is simple: You need to envision a mental image that is clear and focused. It should be something that is so crystal clear in your mind that you will be able to pull it up time and again. The image will be of you living your dream life…everything exactly as you want it. It’s not a formal business plan, but it is a powerful tool and it will keep you moving forward.
Your dream day business plan incorporates a technique that will be as if someone took a snapshot of you living your dream life. It will only be of a moment in time, but after completing this task, you will understand that it will be of a moment that you feel your life is just as you want it to be. It will include you, your family, friends, business, possessions, feelings, etc. Be honest and clear about your answers and write notes down in order to be able to complete the final task of writing a complete snapshot. This is a simple task but you must do it completely for it to help you.
To do this, you should be completely mentally free. Be alone without any other distractions (phone, TV, kids, etc.). Picture a day in your perfect life. How do you look? Be very descriptive: What are you wearing? What is your hair, body, clothing like, etc.? Where are you? What are you doing? Who is with you? How are you feeling? How are your friend and family feeling? Are you active or relaxing? What are you doing? Descibe your house? How about your car? Travel? Are you very social with many friends? Are material items important? What type of weather is it? Are you inside or outside? What’s going on at the moment? Where do you live? Tell yourself what your dream life looks like.
Feel the accomplishment of success. Write it down. It could be just a brief moment with your family near a swimming pool or maybe with friends while skiing in a beautiful location. See what it is and feel everything else in your life as you want it to be.
It’s just one day in your dream life. Be real and focused or be crazy and dream big! Capture your moment in a in-the-moment photograph that you can refer back to and feel success in life. You still had dreams after that moment; only that at the time of the photo, you were a success. You should feel it’s a time of fully realizing your life as you wish.
Now, you should work on your dream day business plan. What is a dream day in your business? How does it run daily? What tasks must you do? Describe it. Be as honest and clear. If you could snap a picture of you in your best day of running your business, what would it look like? Be focused. For example:
“I’d get up at 7:00 a.m. and have freshly brewed coffee and fresh fruit. I get the kids off to school. Then I check my email and go over my daily activity calendar and return a couple of phone calls. At 8:30 a.m. I would jog or do yoga, then shower. My maid would be clearing the breakfast dishes and starting on the laundry. (This is a DREAM DAY, after all.)
At 11:00 a.m. I am showered, dressed and at my desk. Phone re-orders come in and I make $170.00, plus I talk to a client about new products. I write some emails to keep my customers informed about shipments. At 12:30, I have lunch in the sunroom. The sun is shining and it’s a fabulous day. I have a simple green salad and cookies. I read the daily paper and relax. I get ready for my meeting with a new recruit and I sign her easily.
I return home in my new silver convertible Jaguar the company pays for. My children are home from school and I spend some time with them, talking about their day, and laughing about planning an upcoming vacation. By 3:00 p.m. my part-time assistant has arrived and she and I work in the office packaging orders, checking email, working on my newsletter, and a mailing. I finish at 5:30 and spend some time with my children and husband and we eat at an early dinner. My assistant continues working until 6:00 p.m. preparing my case for my evening sales party.
At 9:00, I return home with $500.00 in sales, one recruit, two new possible recruits, and another two bookings. I change into some new cashmere pajamas I bought with a bonus check, check in with the kids and say goodnight. I pour myself a cup of tea and watch TV with my husband. We chat about our day and spend some time together. I relax knowing I’ve had a productive and profitable day.
So on and so forth…make this fit your dream and your life. Take the time to think about what it could be. Then when you’re ready, begin to write a complete “snapshot” of the moment. Be descriptive. Get close to with the photo you create in your head. It will be a great help to you as you can access it again and again. Use it to remind yourself of what you really want in life. When you’re feeling sad and unfocused, you can recall this snapshot and remind yourself what you’re working for now. It can help you make your life the one you really want.
